O2 Broadband Access Description

O2 Home Broadband Access is a package for people who live in areas where O2 have not yet ‘unbundled’. Put simply, this means that O2 have not installed their broadband equipment in the local BT telephone exchange, so you can’t connect to O2 Home Broadband directly – it has to be done through the BT network. O2 Broadband Access lets you get online if you live in one of these areas; however, the cost is higher than their normal broadband plans, as they have to pay BT for access.

The plan costs £22.50 per month. However, if you are already a pay monthly or pay & go O2 mobile customer, you can benefit from a £5 discount, so you’ll pay £17.50 per month. For this you’ll receive all the features of O2’s regular home broadband packages: no download limits (although fair usage policy applies), free UK-based 24/7 customer service, a simple set-up CD and a free O2 wireless router. Download speeds can be anything up to 8Mb, however this is dependent on how far you live from your local telephone exchange – the further away you are, the slower the speed. You’ll also get McAfee Security Software, which, with its spam filters and firewall, will protect you from spyware and viruses.

By the end of 2008, O2 hope to have unbundled 70% of all UK telephone exchanges. If you’re on the Home Broadband Access plan and O2 does install its own broadband equipment your area, they will contact you quickly to arrange a cheaper and faster broadband plan. However, at the time of signing up to Home Broadband Access, O2 cannot guarantee that your network will ever be unbundled.
