Mobile broadband subscriptions top 50 million

Last week we told you of the growing popularity of mobile broadband. The increase in uptake during the past twelve months has been particularly sharp, with the latest Ofcom figures showing that sales of mobile broadband modems, or 'dongles', have grown to be in excess of 100,000 a month.

Now, the latest report from the GSM Association, the body that looks after the global mobile telephone and wireless industries, has shown that the number of people using laptop dongles or mobile phones to access mobile broadband worldwide has risen to more than 50 million. It is thought that there are over two million people currently using mobile broadband in the UK alone.

The reasons for the boom in the mobile broadband market are thought to be related to improvements in the service itself, as well as users becoming more aware of its benefits.

The past twelve months have seen strengthening of the mobile broadband network, with advances in technology allowing for greater speeds than were previously possible. In addition to this, prices have been steadily dropping, with these factors seen as the main driving force behind the mobile broadband sales surge.

Businesses and consumers are now more aware of mobile broadband and its benefits. The flexibility of the medium allows workers to check email on the move, while individuals can do things like keep up to date with social networking or check product prices while out and about.
