Mobile broadband rates slashed for European travellers
Are you a regular traveller to Europe? Do you use mobile broadband to keep an industrious eye on your emails, or to download the occasional music track perhaps? If so, it's worth reviewing current roaming rates.
Mobile broadband in Europe can be extortionate and, if you don’t keep track of charges, you can be hit with an alarming bill when back home.
From July 1st 2008, T Mobile is planning to cut roaming rates by up to 80% for mobile broadband usage across Europe.
So how much could you save? If you are with T Mobile, the cost of internet access from a handset and connecting to mobile broadband via a USB dongle or data card will drop from £7.50 per megabyte to £1.50, a reduction of 80%. This significant drop should give T-Mobile travellers peace of mind that they can enjoy affordable mobile broadband overseas.
So how does this new tariff compare with other leading mobile broadband providers? If you’re travelling to Spain, France, Germany, the Canary Isles or Balearics for example, with Orange the standard rate is £3.00 per megabyte on your mobile broadband (based on a monthly contract). In an Eastern European country, such as the Ukraine, this rises to a standard rate of £8.00 per megabyte.
If you have a monthly contract with O2 the standard rate is £3.00 per megabyte, within Western Europe, and £6.00 per megabyte in Eastern Europe. Mobile broadband bundles may be available at reduced costs.
The big reductions with T Mobile have been made due to the increased demand for mobile broadband access outside of the UK. It may even spark the other mobile broadband players to offer more competitive rates.
