Mobile broadband continues to perform well

As the dust begins to settle following Ofcom's recent report into the telecoms industry, it is clear that one of the major talking points to come out of their findings is the rise of mobile broadband. The regulator found that with mobile broadband already performing well, sales figures are only set to increase in the coming months.

Figures show that 113,000 mobile broadband modems - or 'dongles' - were sold this year in June alone, with sales rising by an average of 18 per cent every month. And by the end of the year that figure could have risen to 300,000 sales every month, adding to the 2 million people already using mobile broadband in the UK.

Mobile broadband, traditionally favoured by people who work on the move away from offices and fixed points of communication, has become increasingly popular with home users. Many people are now signing up to mobile broadband packages as well as - or instead of - their fixed-line broadband connection.

The growth of mobile broadband is perhaps one of the reasons why broadband use in general has increased this year. The report showed that people are spending more time online than ever before, in addition to using phones and television. Broadband penetration in UK homes now stands at just under 60 per cent. The mobile broadband boom has merely added to this.

Ofcom's Peter Phillips said: "Our devotion to watching, listening and staying in touch wherever and whenever we want shows no sign of diminishing."
