It’s good news for those who like their broadband internet use to be free in every way. Consumers may soon receive mobile broadband free as part of their standard home broadband package. Competition is peaking in this market and has created the rigorous price cutting that is likely to lead to free mobile broadband from 2009. Mobile broadband from Vodafphone at £15 a month, is already 65% cheaper and four times faster than two years ago. It’s the next logical leap in a price war to start offering mobile broadband free with mobile phone packages, in the same way home broadband is offered free with home phone deals.
The uptake of mobile broadband is following a similar pattern to the uptake of mobile phones in the early nineties. Perceived initially as an extravagance, it’s becoming more and more mainstream with thousands of users now signing to mobile broadband, in order to enjoy the flexibility and freedom of owning a dongle.
Several laptop makers are building cellular modems into their models, making the need for dongles redundant. Companies like Carphone Warehouse are already offering free laptops if consumers take up a mobile broadband connection with them.
It’s likely that the rise in mobile broadband will have a knock on effect the market for fixed-line domestic broadband However, a Senior Analyst from Ovum; a leading business information consultancy specialising in telecommunications, advised that “Fixed line has too much traction to be replaced any time soon”
Mobile broadband has a lot of appeal in markets where broadband fixed-line is restrictive. It allows communication via the internet to happen anywhere at any time. For mobile workers, students with many residences and travellers it’s a revelation.
