Everyone wants mobile broadband and they want it fast
It's not just mobile broadband that people want now. It's superfast mobile broadband. That means mobile broadband providers are going to have to invest in networks that can support these kinds of advanced speeds. Of course this demand does give the providers the chance to differentiate themselves from their competitors.
Who will be the first to upgrade their networks and offer speeds of 1000 Megabits per second? Well, it's good news if you live in the south of the country.
BT and 02 are trialing super fast mobile broadband in Ebbsfleet, Kent and Bournemouth respectively. But don't get excited. Unfortunately it's going to be a while before the whole country can surf at such speeds. Offering super fast mobile broadband, means these providers can offer high-bandwidth products and differentiate themselves from the likes of Vodaphone, 3 and T-mobile.
The Chief Executive of Ofcom, Ed Richards, says that there has been a 'step change' towards the idea of investing in fibre. Ofcom is intending to publish details of a regulatory framework that will guarantee broadband providers who invest in fibre will get a fair rate of return. Ofcom says it want an environment for the next generation of mobile broadband networks "that both allows and encourages broadband operators to make risky investments, to innovate for the benefit of consumers and if the risks pay off, for the benefit of their shareholders too.
Broadband is a competitive environment and as such is ideal for investment. Which is good news for all mobile broadband users.
