ADSL Broadband

You may have been hearing the word ADSL a lot and wondering exactly what it meant. Well, ADSL is purely and simply the way you get your broadband down your phone line. ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. But there's no need to get your head around all the technology. ADSL is just the actual means of connection down the existing wiring of your home phone.

Just because your broadband is coming down the same connection as your phone, doesn't mean that you can't use both at the same time. When your ADSL is installed, a clever microfilter is plugged into your phone connection and this separates the frequency of your phone line from that of your broadband connection. So you can talk on the phone and log on to the web too if you want to.

ADSL is easily available which has made it very popular. Nearly every home in the UK can get ADSL. If you've got a home phone, you've got the wiring for the connection. You'll find that all the UK internet providers offer ADSL as standard. Only Virgin Media use cable, which again tends to make ADSL more attractive.

Because the technology is instantly available, it's very simple to get connected to ADSL. The other advantage that has made ADSL so hugely popular is the fact that one person can be on the phone and another on the computer at the same time. ADSL is most useful in a home setting rather than for business, which may require enhanced upload speeds via a digital signal.
