Our view
Sky is obviously enormously high profile and could be a big player in the ultra-competitive broadband market. That said, Sky broadband only comes as part of a Sky TV package, which means you’ll pay for broadband on top of whatever you pay for your TV package and BT phone line.
They are likely to be a good choice for those who see entertainment as a priority and want an easy, add on broadband package. If bundled products are your thing, their broadband does seem to offer excellence value. You can watch TV, speak and surf for just £21 per month, or if you’re an existing Sky subscriber then you can pick up a broadband package for just £5. If you’re not already a customer then there is a set up fee, but if you install it yourself, which means that the cost should be lower than other broadband providers.
As befits a large company, they offer good customer support and lots of help finding the most suitable package to suit your needs. Technical support and £50 worth of McAfee internet security is included in your monthly fee as well.
You will need commitment to go with Sky. In addition to the free security, they offer a free wireless router with every package and so want you to sign a 12 month contract.
Company history
Sky has been a leader in digital TV for ten years, but only entered the broadband market through the acquisition of Easynet. It specialises in home broadband, digital TV and phone bundles with the broadband (or phone) only available as part of a TV package.
Sky broadband has been fairly heavily awarded as uGov Joint Winner of Supplier Most Likely to be Recommended, uGov Award Winner Best Value for Money and uGov Winner Best for Ensuring Customers Are On The Best Deal. What’s more, USwitch.com named Sky as a No.1 broadband ‘Best Deal’ for you and ‘Joint Best Value for money’ in 2008.
So it seems you could do a lot worse than Sky for an excellent, value for money broadband.
