Worst broadband providers for spam emails revealed
Spam emails are the scourge of broadband users everywhere, with most surfers having had their own experience of unwanted inbox advertising or, worse still, fraudulent 'phishing' scams.
You might think that your broadband provider would be well-placed to prevent the flow of unsolicited junk mail pouring into your email account, but a new report by anti-spam company ClearMyMail has shown that some of them are 'fighting a losing battle' when it comes to the war against unwelcome inbox intruders.
The report also reveals which of the UK's broadband providers are most heavily affected by spam. The company's research shows that
Orange was one of the worst-hit, with almost 97% of emails received by their users being classed as spam. Three out of the top five most-spammed UK broadband customers were Orange subscribers. In addition, over 80% of the emails delivered to
BT and Tiscali broadband customers was spam.
The news comes amidst claims by broadband provider Eclipse that it blocked over 503 million spam emails during July 2008. "Unsolicited email unfortunately is becoming more prolific as broadband usage continues to increase. At Eclipse, we try to help our customers with a very effective anti-spam solution," said Clodagh Murphy, director of broadband operations.
The company was able to prevent over 82% of spam reaching its customers via its anti-spam solution, whereby suspicious emails are checked and automatically deleted before being delivered to users' inboxes. In the UK, the average number of spam emails blocked per broadband user across all companies is around 31,000.
