Free Broadband

There is no such thing as a free lunch, as the old saying goes, but there is such a thing as free broadband. Well, not exactly free (everything has a catch), but it does cost next-to-nothing. Still confused? Read this guide to find out everything you need to know about 'free broadband'.

What is free broadband?

'Free broadband' is how some companies describe broadband that is bundled on top of other services you are already paying for, like telephone, TV or mobile phones.

When did free broadband start?

The first company to offer "free broadband for all" were Tiscali, in April 2006, who used that slogan to revolutionise the broadband market and kickstart the current trend for 'bundling' of broadband with other communication services. Since then, other providers such as Orange and Sky have launched their own packages.

How free is free broadband?

In most packages, the actual broadband itself costs nothing. However, you will probably have to pay for other services - such as home phone or TV - in order to qualify for free broadband. Look at the following cost breakdown for someone who is buying their communication services separately:

  • Phone line rental: £11 a month
  • Home phone package: £17 a month
  • Digital TV package: £17 a month
  • Broadband: £15 a month

If that person switched to a free broadband package, in other words, a deal where broadband is included in the price of the home phone or digital TV subscription, they would instantly save £15 a month. Further savings could be made by 'bundling' the other services too. For more information on broadband bundles read this guide here.

Anything else?

Never settle for a sub-standard broadband connection just because it's free. Look for a package that suits your needs and accept there might be a point when you need to upgrade.
