Fast Broadband
In the days of dial-up internet access, fast broadband for all seemed like nothing but a distant dream. Now, though, fast broadband is becoming less of a privilege and more of a necessity.
What is 'fast broadband'?
A connection of 8Mbps or above would probably be classed as fast broadband. That figure is around 160 times faster than an old dial-up connection running at 56k, but there are already much faster packages available, with some even running as high as 24Mbps.
Technology evolves all the time and broadband is no different. And with the internet expanding to provide more services, it's only going to get faster. Right now, Virgin Media are implementing plans to bring 50Mb broadband to UK homes. The hope is that eventually everyone will have access to super fast broadband and speeds up to a staggering 1Gbps.
Why do I need fast broadband?
A fast broadband connection is great for people who use the internet a lot, but it doesn't just ensure smoother surfing. It's essential for those who want to transfer lots of data, for example downloading music and movies, or sending pictures to loved ones. It's also ideal for watching television shows via broadband on-demand services like the BBC iPlayer.
Many websites today offer next-generation functionality, using rich graphics and interactive layouts to enhance your browsing experience or simply make it more fun. Fast broadband is essential for ensuring the latest websites appear quickly and unimpeded on your screen.
