Broadband customers hit by hidden charges
British broadband customers are in a state of blissful ignorance over hidden charges, according to a recent survey by the Moneysupermarket.
It appears broadband customers are so keen to get surfing, they’re only casting half an eye over their broadband contracts. The result of the complacency is a string of hidden charges that sting 27% of broadband customers, at an average cost of £36 per person, per year.
4.5 million households have been hit by hidden charges, which have seen broadband providers lining their pockets with £160m extra revenue.
The small print can include details of charges for paper billing (the most common charge incurred) and non-Direct Debit payments. Late payment charges and installation fees are also a source of irritation for customers.
BT users reportedly had to foot the most expensive ‘hidden charges’ bill at an extra £51 per year, followed by Virgin Media (£42), Sky (£35) and AOL (£29).
Moneysupermarket has recommended broadband customers answer the following questions before getting tied in:
- Are there any charges for paying by non-direct debit methods?
- What is your broadband download limit? Does you provider charge if you go over it?
- How much does it cost to call your broadband provider if you have a technical problem?
- Does it cost you to cancel your broadband contract or if you move home in the first 12 months?
