Broadband TV goes handheld
With broadband technology like
BT Vision and catch-up services such as the BBC’s iPlayer showing no sign of decreasing in popularity, the rise of so-called ‘TV over broadband’ services continues apace.
Now, Sony has announced that users of its PSP handheld console will be able to access Premiership football on their unit via broadband after a deal with the premier league and current rights holders Sky Sports was reached.
The handheld device is already used by many people as a way of viewing content over broadband using its wireless capabilities in Wi-Fi hotspots. Now, PSP owners will be able to use the console’s broadband TV on demand service, GO!View, to see action from the Barclay’s Premiership.
From 17 August, broadband users will be able to use their wireless connections to transfer 45 minutes of highlights from Sky Sports to their handheld console. They will have to sign up to Sky Sports’ subscription service, which delivers other sporting footage including cricket, golf, boxing and extreme sports as part of the Sports Pack via broadband.
Go!View customers who are new to streaming TV over broadband can pick up a one-month trial subscription to the Sports Pack, as well as other packages called ‘Comedy’ and ‘Entertainment’. In addition to this, users can also watch the latest movies and TV via broadband in the palm of their hand. Prices are between £5 and £10, depending on the number of packages customers buy.
