Broadband Connection More Popular than Booze and Fags

A survey carried out by Plusnet, one of the UK's top broadband suppliers, revealed that 30% of people surveyed would rather give up alcohol, cigarettes and magazine subscriptions than their broadband connection. The survey was designed to find out how demand for broadband might be affected by the current economic situation.

Far from having a negative effect on broadband usage, 92% of people said they would keep their broadband connections, despite the economic downturn. 58% said they would stick with the same broadband supplier or tariff while 34% said they would consider looking for cheaper broadband if the economic situation continued to worsen. Many people see broadband not as a luxury but a modern day necessity and even a tool that can help them save money in other areas. Users cited reading papers online, as opposed to buying them, finding bargains on price comparison sites and paying bills online to get discounts as areas where they used their broadband connections to help them save money.

The survey also revealed the most common use of broadband as 'web browsing'. Neil Armstrong, Plusnet Products Director, said, "Broadband is now so popular and central to the daily life of Britain that few consumers are ready to end their broadband connection completely to make ends meet. Some are ready to switch suppliers to help with their household budgets but they still want to keep broadband.�
