Brainier people use broadband more

People with a degree or equivalent qualification are more like to have access to broadband in their homes than those with no formal qualifications, according to new figures released by the Office for National Statistics. The numbers show that 93 per cent of qualified adults under 70 have a broadband connection, compared with just 56 per cent of those without a degree.

The report also found there to be a geographical divide in broadband usage, with people in the North of England being less likely to have access to the internet. The proportion of homes with broadband access up north is 54%, compared with 74% in the South East.

The study surveyed adults across the UK and found that in the three months leading up to interview, 33.9 million people (71 per cent of the population) had accessed the internet, with a large proportion of them using a broadband connection to do so.

Men are still using broadband more than women, according to new figures released by the Office for National Statistics. The numbers show that, as in previous years, males are more likely to access a broadband service than females, with 75 per cent of them logging on compared to 66 per cent of 'the fairer sex'.

The study also showed that in 2008, the number of UK households with internet access rose 16.46 million. Of these, 86 per cent had a broadband connection, meaning that broadband penetration across all UK households is now up to 56 per cent, a five per cent rise from last year.
