BT Attempt to Muscle in on Tiscali Broadband Customers
Following the announcement at the beginning of the year that Tiscali, one of the UK's biggest broadband providers, were considering selling up,
BT broadband have decided to adopt an aggressive marketing strategy, specifically targeting Tiscali broadband customers. With the future of Tiscali broadband currently uncertain, BT have been sending letters directly to Tiscali broadband customers with the heading 'Tiscali Chief Plots Sell-Off - You Can be Confident with BT Total Broadband', prompting concerns over access to customer information and criticism of BT's aggressive strategy.
The letter, which has been sent only to customers using Tiscali broadband or one of its subsidiaries, Pipex or Nildram, suggests that BT broadband is a much safer option as it is 'here to stay'. With competition for broadband customers increasing, as the number of people without broadband continues to drop, BT has defended its actions saying, "We use direct marketing as part of our customer-acquisition activity on an ongoing basis, sourcing customer details from reputable external sources. We often mention competitors in order that comparisons can be made - this direct mail is no different.
The letters are still receiving criticism from some Tiscali customers, however, who feel they are being bullied into changing broadband provider and that BT are using scare tactics to attract their custom. The letter tells them, "We can understand why you might be wondering what might happen to your Tiscali broadband service...changing your provider to BT could be the right move if you're worried about the future of your broadband service.
