MAC Codes

What is a MAC code?

MAC stands for Migration Authorisation Code and it is a unique 17-18 digit code that identifies your broadband connection on the local exchange. It is used when a customer wishes to switch from one broadband provider to another.

Why do I need one?

If you intend to switch broadband providers it is useful to get a MAC code because it gives your new provider all the vital information – like the type of phone line you have, details of your exchange and so on – they need to make your switchover as seamless as possible. Without a MAC code it can take much longer than necessary to switch over your connection.

How do I get my MAC code?

Simply by ringing up your broadband provider and requesting it. Since 2007 it has been compulsory for ISPs to provide switching customers with a MAC code, so do not worry about asking for it. Your code should be provided within five days.

What happens next?

MAC codes are valid for 30 days after being issued, during which time you should forward yours to your new broadband provider. They can then use this to switch over your broadband connection, which should take between 6-10 days.

Will I lose broadband if I request a MAC code?

No. The whole point of a MAC code is to aid a seamless switch between broadband providers. Once you have requested your code and given it to your new ISP there should be no loss in service during the time it takes to switch your account. You may be given a date for the switchover, on which you could experience a few hours’ gap in service, but this is nothing compared to the several weeks a switchover could take without a code.
