Our view
One of the original UK ISPs, AOL broadband is renowned for providing excellent value packages for occasional and power users. AOL has promoted itself as ‘the broadband experts’, but now they could be called the ‘king of freebies’, as the ISP now offers free laptops, and a free wireless router which is great for anyone already with a laptop, iPod touch, Xbox live, Play station etc.
AOL as a provider was at the forefront of the wireless revolution and was the first ISP to include a wireless router as standard with all broadband packages.
AOL broadband has a good ‘family provider’ reputation. This has a sound basis in the fact that all AOL home broadband packages have great security and parental controls. This includes extensive content, firewall software, and antivirus email scanning.
AOL broadband is perfect for people new to the web, looking for flexible packages with a free laptop thrown in. They offer superb wireless home broadband packages with free call options. Call options stack up favourably with those of BT.
Company history
AOL is the world’s leading interactive services provider. It connects almost two million customers to the internet and offers an enhanced broadband experience with award winning customer support and easy to install software, helping new customers get on line easily.
AOL is a solid, reliable provider that does what it says on the tin, with easy set up, good customer and technical support. The antivirus software and parental controls with monitoring and blocking software are all included in the monthly set up fee, which makes it appear a responsible provider.
They have no published awards from the ISPAs (the UK internet industry awards) but have a good reputation nonetheless and came third in a survey of the UK’s top ISPs by Epitiro, who monitor ISP performance.
